2022 Tesla Model 3 long-term maintenance: what I would service, inspect, and leave alone
A long-term maintenance plan for a 2017-2023 Tesla Model 3 covering tires, brakes, filters, suspension, HVAC, fluids, coolant, and inspection priorities.

Bottom line
A Model 3 has less routine service than an ICE car. It is not maintenance-free.
For my 2022 Model 3 Performance, I separate maintenance into three buckets:
- Tesla-specified recurring items with a published interval or condition;
- normal wear/safety inspections that depend on mileage, environment, and symptoms;
- fluids/components Tesla does not schedule for routine replacement, which I inspect rather than inventing an internet interval.
That last category matters. “Lifetime” and “replace every X miles because cars need fluids” are both too simplistic.
Maintenance matrix
Intervals below were checked against Tesla's current maintenance guidance on September 9, 2026. Follow the vehicle's current manual and service alerts if they differ.
Tesla's sparse schedule is not permission to ignore mechanical wear. It means the car should be managed with scheduled consumables + condition-based inspection, not by importing an ICE maintenance menu that does not apply.

60,000-mile inspection I would pay for
Around the mileage of my own 2022 Model 3 Performance, a low-cost professional inspection has better ROI than randomly replacing fluids.
I would ask for:
- four-corner tire wear measurements;
- alignment if wear/handling suggests it;
- brake-pad/rotor/hardware inspection;
- suspension/steering play and boot/bushing inspection;
- wheel-bearing noise/play;
- underbody and jack-point damage;
- coolant/leak visual inspection by a qualified technician;
- HVAC performance if symptoms exist;
- scan/service-mode review for persistent faults;
- 12V/low-voltage health appropriate to the vehicle build.
The goal is to catch wear before it destroys a tire, creates collateral damage or turns a small problem into roadside failure.
What I would not service just because an internet checklist says so
I would not automatically buy:
- a high-voltage battery coolant flush;
- a drive-unit oil change;
- refrigerant replacement;
- power-steering fluid service;
- engine-style tune-up items that do not exist.
That is the other side of preventative maintenance ROI: unnecessary maintenance is still waste.
Battery longevity: manage heat and extremes, not rituals
For normal use I follow Tesla's charging guidance for the specific battery/vehicle and avoid building a superstition around exact percentages.
Useful habits include:
- use scheduled/home charging rather than leaving the car needlessly at extreme states of charge for long periods;
- follow the vehicle's recommended daily charge limit;
- precondition/navigation-route to fast chargers when the car supports it;
- do not treat occasional Supercharging or a 100% road-trip charge as battery abuse;
- investigate abnormal range/charging behavior rather than interpreting every seasonal change as degradation.
The high-voltage battery is a major tail risk, but the warranty and observed fleet longevity are why I would not budget for a routine battery replacement as if it were a timing belt.
Used-buyer maintenance audit
A used Tesla should be inspected like a car, not like a phone.
Verify:
- VIN/title/history;
- remaining battery/drive-unit warranty;
- tire age, brand and inside-edge wear;
- wheel damage;
- alignment/steering behavior;
- suspension noise;
- brake condition/corrosion;
- underbody/battery enclosure damage;
- charge-port function;
- HVAC heat/cooling;
- cameras/sensors/lights;
- powered seats/windows/trunk;
- included mobile connector/adapters if represented;
- FSD/Autopilot package status from the vehicle/account, not a seller screenshot alone.
My ownership rule
BUY preventative inspection. WAIT on replacement until evidence says the component is due. PASS on invented service intervals.
That is the maintenance philosophy I want for a high-mileage Tesla: catch real wear early without turning an EV into an ICE service schedule by habit.
